On pilgrimage

Once a year we make a special pilgrimage into Wellington to Kirkcaldie & Stains' Christmas Shop. I remember visiting Kirks as a child to look at the Christmas decorations - they always had the best window displays in the city - and to go to the Christmas Shop, which is a bit of a Wellington institution. It's like fairyland, all the ceilings hung with fake pine, ivy, and holly greenery, fairy lights everywhere, and the best selection of fancy Christmas tree decorations anywhere in Wellington. It's always really hot and packed with people, but I wouldn't miss that trip for anything.

We've been going every year since we were married, and we choose one special tree decoration each - last year was the first time that we had to get three decorations! This year taking the small daughter was much more interesting, as she was fascinated by all of the lights and sparkly things everywhere. She actually chose her decoration herself too: she saw what she wanted and pointed it out to us, and the cool thing is that it will match our tree colour scheme exactly!

Our tree and decorations go up on Advent Sunday, but before then we'll have to figure out how to keep small daughter and Christmas tree apart.....
