Starlight Express

Starlight Express was really good - we went, despite me feeling fairly awful with a seriously heavy cold. This is the sixth major musical I've seen: Les Miserables (twice), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (saw this done professionally and sang in it at school), Chess (Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from ABBA wrote it - really interesting story), Cats last year, and Evita, Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar on the movie versions (which may or may not count!).

I liked Starlight Express, but I felt that it lacked heart. As a spectacle, a cast of 30 people zooming around the stage on rollerskates doing stunts and singing, it was pretty amazing, but it felt a bit hollow compared with Cats and Phantom of the Opera. The only song that really got me was the title track, which is also the only song widely known from this musical. Musically, it was definitely not as strong as later ALW musicals. The performances were generally good, especially the young Englishman they had playing Rusty (who sings the title song).

Afterwards, we had also won a night at a very plush hotel in Wellington. We had an apartment which included a spa bath about the size of an olympic swimming pool! Very nice....

Loads of thanks to Classic Hits for an awesome night out, though.
