We heard last night of the death of Auckland Zoo's lovely elephant Kashin. I met Kashin a few times when I was living in Auckland, and she was a regular star on The Zoo, the TV programme filmed at Auckland Zoo. I don't think I ever rode her, unlike the elephant that used to be at Wellington Zoo when I was small, but she also contributed to my love of the wonderful members of the genus Pachyderm that lend their names to this blog.
Requiescat in pace, Kashin.
